Elephant Tusks: Elephant Teeth Facts

Elephant Tusks (teeth) are one of the those things which differs an elephant from other animals(mammals). There are 12 per-molars and 12 molars which make an elephant teeth. The heaviest teeth of elephant weighs about 107 kg but average elephant teeth weight is less than this weight. An elephant’s tusks are its second upper incisor teeth. When the elephant teeth begin to grow they are covered with a cap of enamel. But gradually this cap is removed as the size of these teeth increases. Elephants use their tusks (teeth) for defence and feeding.  The teeth of an Asiatic elephant are bigger than African elephant teeth. See the elephant teeth pictures here.
