Elephants are the biggest living land animals. There are two types of elephant, African and Asian. Both types live in herds, and have poor eyesight, but very good senses of hearing and smell. If one animal detects danger, the whole herd is alerted. Elephants do not defend the home range over which they wander; instead they seem to know and be on friendly terms with their neighbours. Each herd is led by an old female who is followed by her young offspring and her adult daughters and their families. The elephants in a herd remain together for many years. Its members keep close to each to each other and look after and even suckle each other’s babies if need be. Sometimes a herd splits, and a younger female leaves with some of the others, but they remain close to the parent group and may rejoin it briefly.

Young males leave the herd when they reach puberty, at the age of about twelve years. Males may from herds, but these do not have any constant members and change from one day to the next. There is no special breeding season, but if a female is ready to mate, her group will be joined by males though they will not remain permanently. Elephants are among the largest land mammals on earth. Watch the elephants pictures of African and Asian origion.

There are two major types of elephants in the world namely African and Asian. Both of these elephant are endangered species as the ivory hunters are posing some serious threats to the existence of these mammal species. Indian elephants are endangered species as only 50,000 elephants are alive in China, Sri Lanka, India, Borneo, Sumatra and Andaman Island while 15,000 in captivity. African elephants are also prone to the some serious threats but they are not included in the ICUN list of endangered species.

Threats to Elephants: There are different types of human factors which are resposible for the decrease in population of the elephant species specially the Indian elephants. Here are elephants endangered facts;

1. Poaching of elephants for ivory specially the African elephants. Poaching of Indian elephants is not as common as of African elephants. Ivory is used for making different products in the world therefore hunters kill elephants to exploit this precious thing.
2. Expanding population require more agricultural land to meet the food needs of the human beings. For this end local governments are wiping out the forests to make them cultivable for agricultural use. This is a cause of vanishing out the natural habitats of elephants and other endangered species.
3. Also the rapid changing atmosphere is creating some problems for the survival of these endangered species.
As the In the past there were many species of elephants, which lived over most of the world apart form Australia. Some were much bigger than the elephants of today, but they are now extinct. As a result of hunting for ivory and poaching and taking over the elephants’ environment, there are far fewer elephant today than there were even 20 years age. Many people feel that it is not possible for such large and demanding animals to survive in a world of expanding human populations.

What Elephants Eat: An elephant’s size means that, when it is fully grown, it is safe from all predators other than humans. To support its large size it needs huge amounts of food. An adult elephant eats about 150 kg (300 lb) of grass, leaves, twigs and fruit each day. Tree bark is the favourite food source of elephants. To supplement the diet, elephants will dig up earth to obtain salt and minerals. The tusks are used to churn the ground.

Elephant Eat Grass Picture

What Elephants Drink: Elephants require 65 to 95 litres of water every day. This is because of the bulky size of the elephants.
Such tough food needs to be thoroughly chewed, and elephants have grinding teeth in the back of their mouths. This is the position in which the teeth have the most force, but they do wear out. When this happens they are replaced by others which push in from behind. In all they have six sets of grinding teeth, but when the last of these wears out, the animals is probably about 55 years old. It becomes weakened by lack of food and dies of starvation or disease.

The average size of an elephant varies among the African and Asiatic elephant. The tusk of Asian elephants are bigger than the African elephants where as the brain size of an elephant is the largest among all other mammals on the earth. The elephant is among the most intelligent animal on earth. While the size of an elephant’s brain is the largest in size among the land mammals, it actually only occupies a small area at the back of the skull. However, in proportion to the size of the body, the elephant brain is smaller than the human brain. Despite this, the elephant is one of the only animals along with all apes (including ourselves), sperm whales and a few other creatures who has a large brain relative to body size.

African Elephant Facts:
Head and body length of an African elephant: 6.0—7.5 m.
Shoulder height of African elephant: 3—4 m.
Weigh of African elephant: t 2,200—7,500 kg.
Weight of Elephant Brain: 4.2 to 5.4 Kilograms
Weight of an Elephant’s heart: 28 to 30 Kgs. The heart of an elephant beats only 28 times a minute as compared to the heart of a mouse which beats 500 times a minute.

An elephant’s tusks are its second upper incisor teeth. When the elephant teeth begin to grow they are covered with a cap of enamel. But gradually this cap is removed as the size of these teeth increases. Elephants use their tusks (teeth) for defence and feeding. The teeth of an Asiatic elephant are bigger than African elephant teeth. See the elephant teeth pictures here.
