Sir George Cunningham joined Indian Civil Service in 1911. Before partition he served two times as Governer of NWFP. After the independence of Pakistan, Sir George Cunningham was selected as the first Governor of the province of Pakistan by Quaid-e-Azam, Mohammed Ali Jinnah. He remained the governor for only one year. NWFP was renamed as Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa through 18th amendment.
