The capital of San Marino is the City of San Marino, located on the western slopes of San Marino’s highest point, Monte Titano. It is the economical, cultural and social hub of the country, hosting a population of 4, 493 people, spread over a land of 7.09km2. It is the third largest city in the country and borders many San Marino municipalities, as well as the Italian municipality San Leo. Even though San Marino is the capital city of the country, many businesses are located in Borgo Maggiore.

Saint Marinus was the founder of the city, along with several other Christian refugees who set up home here in the year 301; from that point onwards, the city was the center of Christian refugees fleeing from the persecutions of the Romans. Hence, the city gained historical importance of being the oldest republic in Europe. The economy in San Marino city was closely bound to the country’s as the main economic activities were limited to stone extraction and carving; recently, however, the economy has brought in variety with tourism, commerce, sale of postage stamps, and also an agricultural industry. The city has become a great tourist center, receiving a large number of Italian tourists; it has also a number of retail outlets with a great variety of products that helps its tourism industry grow.
