The Quetzal is the official currency of Guatemala. Its ISO code is GTQ and its symbol is G. The subunit of Quetzal is centavo. The name of currency of Guatemala is unique because it is named after a bird the Quetzal. The feathers of Quetzal were used as currency in ancient times in Guatemala so they named their currency Guatemala.

Guatemala is an independent country in Central America. It has borders with Mexico on the North West. Republic of Guatemala is an old country as they got independence from Spain in 1821. After the independence the official currency of Guatemala was peso. After more than hundred years of independence in 1925 Guatemala introduced their own currency Quetzal. At the start coins of 1, 5, 10 centavos, ¼, ½ and 1 Quetzal were introduced. ¼, ½ Quetzal were taken back and they stop circulating. Currently circulated coins are of value of 1, 5, 1 25 50 centavo and 1 Quetzal.

Banknotes were introduced in 1931 and were issued by the Central Bank of Guatemala. The banknotes that were issued at that time were of value 1,2,5,10,20 and 100. In 1950 50 Quetzal notes were also introduced. These notes are unchanged and are still in circulation.
